Lens problem

Post by Sue Boon »

Hi, I need some help please. I have an 18-55mm Canon lens. Recently when I have been taking photos I get an Err 99 code. When I looked this up it said it meant dirty contacts and the solution was to clean the contacts. I have tried to clean these contacts about 4 or 5 times but with no success. Initially the problem was when I was at the 18mm end of the lens, the 55mm end was working ok. Now it seems to be getting worse. Also the other day it was struggling to autofocus (I don't know whether this is connected or not). I have tried this lens on 3 different cameras so I know it is a fault of the lens and not the camera. Please can anyone help?

Sue,

I've had something similar in the past and it was my batteries. I have a few problems with my 24-105 as it 'hunts' for focus when one of my batteries is less than about 40%. I have had the Err99 with another battery that was faulty on my 70-200.

Is it time for a new battery?

I have tried cleaning the lens and camera several times. I know it is the lens because it has done this on 4 different cameras. When it first happened on the original camera I changed the batteries, then I changed the memory card. I tried different lenses on the camera and they weren't a problem so I know it is definitely the lens. I am beginning to realise that this err 99 doesn't mean a specific problem, it can mean anything which isn't very helpful in diagnosing what's wrong. Most of the forums suggest a problem with the camera but this can't be the case.

I don't know your lens, but maybe......

"Check and make sure the aperture ring ( if your lens has one is LOCKED on f22) this is a must for most digitals to use AF and if its moved you will get an err messages. sometimes its the f-- or error 99"
