18th April 2013 - Prints Annual Competition

Post by John »

Self explanatory, should be an exciting event, with loots more images allowed in than last year. Plus more trophies, awards and even medals to keep!

The vital thing is to remember that it's a 7.30pm start.
Best regards

Many thanks to our judge and to Keith for organising this. It was great to see more images this time and it proved to be quite manageable.

Three cheers as well for Lesley running up and down with prints! ADAPS - enjoy photography and keep fit at the same time!
Best regards

Great competition last night and lovely to see such a variety of subjects and new images. Well done to Tracey for the overall winner and to everyone who entered. Some cracking images. I would not have liked to have had to judge them. On the subject of judges, I thought last nights judge was not of the usual standard! In my opinion he was a little to negative, and there was no connection to his audience whatsoever. I know that he had a lot to get through, a job to do, but.......

Thanks Janice, all taken on board. This section is for feedback, good or not so good, so many thanks for the honest appraisal. :)

Hi,
Thanks for your comments, and I would also like to add my thanks to Lesley, Paul and Tracey for helping out on what could have been a much more difficult night than it was.
As a first time we have tried one of these for a while I think it went well, and was something different.
I am sure we all remember the year before last when we were here until almost the next day, and last year when one category had only six entries.
There was a much better range of work on show this year, as it should be.

On the subject of judging though, it should be noticed though that this was not the 'usual' competition,( like the monthlies ). When a judge does our monthly competitions his criteria is to be positive and encouraging, to provide guidelines for newer members and to occasionally point out shortfalls in images. But the overall task for a judge is to find the positive in every image, and to try not to discourage anyone.

However in the Annuals the criteria changes. The judges instructions on these occasions is to select a Winner and to award those that came close. He ( or she ), will assume that the vast majority of images have already been commented on by a judge in a previously monthly competition. So the only comments he is expected to make is to point out why some images came close to receiving an award, but didn't quite make it to a certificate and medal.
With this in mind it can come across over the evening that the only comments made are negative ones, but this is, on these occasions the judges instructions.

Next week with the digital competition the three judges will only comment on the top scoring images, and again they may well all be seemingly negative comments, and only the highest scoring images will be reviewed and commented on, but with over 250 slides to get through on the night, it is the only way to make it work, ( hopefully).

See you all nice and early next thursday,

Keith.

Thanks for the explanation on the methods and criteria for judging Keith. I now have a fuller understanding of the judging with regard to the Annuals, Much appreciated.

No Problem Janice,
Brian is a very experienced judge, and president of Macclesfield CC., so I am sure that on another occasion, (such as a monthly or a battle against another club), we would have seen a different, more positive aspect of his judging. Which we may do one day, as he says he enjoyed his visit, and I am sure would not mind being invited back sometime in the future.
Regards, Keith.

Just a comment on the Annual Prints. With the seating rearranged, I was expecting as in previous years, that the prints would all be lined up along the wall and judged there. As it was, the judge blocked the view of the easel and the prints could only be seen when placed up after judging.
