cleaning negatives/slides

I have ordered a negative copier and would like some advice/suggestions as to best way to clean my negatives before I scan them.

Quick dust with a rocket blower and then a microfibre cloth, used gently. There will still be plenty of spots, so using Digital Ice may help considerably. Many scanners have this.
