I've hardly done any photography this year. These photos are the first I've taken in around 6 months. I was thinking that I might have forgotten how...

A couple of weeks ago a model friend asked if I fancied a beach shoot, so I blew the cobwebs off my camera and we headed off to Formby Beach. We spent just under two hours there and got through about four sets (costume changes).

All images taken on the 'Keep It Simple' basis - Fuji S5 Pro, Nikon 28-105 lens, Nikon SB-800 speedlight, manual mode, RAW.

In post-processing I've added a slight cross-processing to a few.

I'm not sure whether I prefer the colour versions or duotoned. Which do you prefer?

I should also add that when photographing, I have a habit of picturing in my head how the images would look in a magazine spread, hence the reason why I tend to present images in this two-page spread way, as opposed to standalone portraits.

Please post any comments you like (good or bad). Feel free to practice your judging skills...

Nar serious note, firstly, good job on the model.
Secondly I love both the coloured and duo tone images and my favourite two:

1) The one where she is stretching the garment, although her expression in her face is not as good as in some of the other shots.
2) The coloured one next to it....loving the negative space you used there Paul =P

Would have loved to have seen a few messy shots (water n sand), I'm guessing it was cold though by the time of year, although in your shots it looks mid summer (apart from the stiff nips) which is an achievement in it's self.

You have done a good job with all of these images. It's hard to chose which I prefer regarding the mono or coloured, I suppose it depends what you intend the photos to be for, the mono have more of an arty feel to them whereas the colour are more editorial.

My favourite out of these are:

1. The two mono shots with the stretchy white fabric. I like the poses in these and the arty feel to them.

2. The colour version of No 2, you have captured her sultry look and the pose well.

3. The colour version of No 1, I like the angle this was taken.

4. The one on the left of No 5, I like the angle you have taken this and the eye contact is good.

My least favourite is the one with the red top.

Very brave of both you and the model for taking these in a public area. The weather and lighting was kind to you and the scenery made for an interesting (and different) backdrop to the usual photo shoots.

You should dust your camera off more often, I look forward to seeing more of your work.

The coloured one with the negative space is one of my personal favourites.

Although sunny, the day was cold so frolicking in the sea was definitely out. We wrapped the shoot up in two hours as it was getting so cold. Formby Beach isn't exactly Miami - which is where L used to model professionally.

I personally prefer the mono ones Paul; nice set of dunes I must say *ducks to avoid Pammie's left hook* lol; very professional set of images and I do like your website, shhh don't tell Pammie; thanks for sharing

I like all of them they are all of your usual high standard and refreshingly differant from a studio shoot, the last time I was in the sandhills on Formby beach with a female was over 50 years ago and I hadn't got a camera,

Well, why not on a beach, given that if you want to photograph the girl she's got to be somewhere....it's much more interesting than a white paper roll.....

Paul, I really like them all, so I give them all a 12.

I don't like the red one as much as the others, but think it's because you have included them all together to be honest, so it stands out a bit more.
Good poses, good tones, I like them.

I like the black and whites especially, big fan. I need to get to Formby Beach and try my hand.

It's interesting about the red top photo. I still quite like it, but I showed them to a professional photographer friend of mine in London and he too picked out the red top one as his least favourite, so you're all probably right. That's OK.

Again - this isn't a moan about the judge. I think we've all experienced occasions where competitions don't go our way and the thing to do is just grin and move on.

Just be thankful you didn't put her in front of a brick wall
