The Tom & KT Show

Post by Gill Blower »

Well done both of you for a great presentation. It was both informative and fun. I have tried two of the techniques already and was surprised how easy and effective the results were. Great night, really enjoyed it....when's the next one?

Regards, Gill

Awww so glad you have had a go, which two did you try out?

Think we have a basics workshop a week on Saturday, which will be set in small groups and we will be working at a slow pace. Basically we will be going through getting users to use Photoshop to the point that they can get photos in and out of it and learn one or two tools, what masks are and the concept of layers and adjustments. It will be at a more personal level and hands on, rather than a lecture, so you will need to bring a laptop with Photoshop or sit next to someone with one.

If you would like a more specific lesson or in depth editing or one on one training, we may do private lessons, just let us know.

If anyone else has had a go at the techniques, we would love to hear how it went or see your before and afters. I know Tom's blending with the sky is not something I have used before, so I'm going to have a go at that, that was awesome!

An informative and entertaining presentation. Well done both of you. I have tried the 'sky' technique and it is so simple and effective.

Just an idea: Is there any chance of written notes to accompany the different techniques demonstrated please? I was making notes but in the cold light of day they don't make complete sense

Thanks to both of you

Photoshop tips and tricks

Post by Peaton »

Very good show last night from Tom and K.T., need more of these, surprising how many different ways there are of doing things in Photoshop. you’ve watched all the tutorials, and think you’ve tried all the tricks, and “bang”, there comes another one.

Well done, both of you, Thanks for an interesting evening.

Peter

Ps. anybody know any ways of remembering all these things.

A lot of people have asked for an accompanying handout for the evening, we will see what we can do ^^

Lovely to see so many people hungry to learn more Photoshop, it's a wonderful piece of software that most people don't take advantage of or just need guiding in the right direction. I think me and Tom work quite well at this because we bounce ideas and new techinques off each other all the time, he has a lot more experience than me in photography and knowing what to edit, where as I work more in depth with the tools, so together, we are awesome!

Keep experimenting guys n gals (I'm talking Photoshop btw) !!

Well I must be thick because I can't change the background colour, cant choose a colour for the trails or remove the path anyway, and I gave up after that. And I wrote it down!!

Will have to come on a Saturday and get the hang of this stuff

I think I'm gonna pass on next Saturday after all... I'm not ready for photoshop & I certainly can't afford to buy it... lmao.. I'll concentrate on learning how to use the camera properly & getting some reasonable photos first. That's why I joined the club & one step at a time is enough for me... lol

Well done to both of you, an unusual duo, Laurel and Hardy springs to mind  . It's not easy standing up in front of a full house but you did a great job. I've tried out some of your techniques and come up with this picture. The woman in the picture is 50 year old Doris. I have made her look younger and added grass, stars and butterflies. She can now touch her toes, skip, dance and love her teddy.
But like Kathy I thought the P in ADAPS stood for Photographic not Photoshop. LEARN TO TAKE PICTURES FIRST, THEN USE PROCESSING.

I respect your opinion Gerry, but personally, I think if you enjoy your hobby be it Photography or Photoshop, then that is your choice. As photography takes many many years to gain skills, so does photo editing. It would seem odd to me for people to spend years learning photography and then spend years learning photography editing. The two come hand in hand and if you have the time and the software there is no reason why not to learn them both at the same time. I will welcome any photographer of any level to have fun with editing, I recently went to a very good Photography college for Jazz, with portfolios from 16-19 year olds that were outstanding...they are taught Photoshop from day one at a very high standard.

I do see your point if people are very new and are still learning to operate the camera itself, but at the end of the day it is down to the individual what they wish to do with their time and hobby. Lets try stay positive about this, no need for the sarcasm, caps lock or telling people what to do.

Hi Kathy

Several post-processing techniques can be achieved with lower cost or free image editing software. I'd recommend you Google and take a look at:

Photoshop Elements
Paint Shop Pro
GIMP
Google Picasa

The ADAPS website LINKS page also has several links to image editing software.

It does. And I think ADAPS does a decent job of promoting the art of "photography" in all its forms.

I think that, for most people, digital photography and post-processing go hand in hand - in a similar manner to film photography and darkroom techniques.

Of course, as you say, it's always best to start with a good photograph first. Photoshop isn't about turning a sow's ear into a silk purse.
