Hi Danny
the tight crop is a good idea, it focuses your attention on the face of the chap, whilst cutting out the distractions such as the red area to the left and the striped area to the right. He has a good expression and it shows his concentration on playing the sax. There is no eye contact, but for this kind of shot I don't always think it is necessary, you are showing the character engrossed in what he is doing. Perhaps a little sparkle in the eyes wouldn't come amiss though. Overall a nice character study.

Danni
This is a nice shot and one I wish I had taken.
My comments are:
The image posted is too big for a 1024 monitor so I keep having to scroll up and down. I finally downloaded it and pulled it up in photoshop. Something for any one posting to keep in mind.
Like Pammie it is the background that lets it down for me. You will get away with selecting the left hand side and putting some blur on it.
The right hand side needs to be darkened down considerably. Putting a "light wash" of a colour similar to the blurred left hand side or copying the left may give you some balance.
Finally I would get rid of the little triangle in the top right.
Because of the nice skin tones I think it would make a smashing print.

Re: Comment please
Hi Danny
It's a nice character study and sums up the guy pretty well.
The background doesn't bother me too much. Red is a dominant colour though within most images, so you could try toning the red down if you find it bothers you, or perhaps converting the image to black and white if you wanted to experiment. Having said that, it's not really an issue for me.
If this is the full size image there's not much you can do about it, but I would have liked to see less cap and more sax.
The cap is quite dominant. Perhaps if you cropped an inch or two off the top of the cap it might help. This would also lose the triangle of light background in the top right hand corner. Just a suggestion.
I agree with Theo about the image size. Large photos can cause issues on screen, so it's best to stick to smaller sizes. When I post images for appraisal I usually stick to a size of around 600 x 400 or thereabouts, so there's no scrolling needed.

Re: Comment please
I like the pictiure and im not put off by the hat. Cant be a musician without a different slant on fashion. Agree with Paul that it needs a little more sax. He has an interesting face and you have caught all the skin tones very well. Would be nice to see it again, Danny. As the finished article. As to see if the sugestions really do add to an improved image.
