Photographer Inspirations?

Post by Paul Jones »

How often do you look at other photographer's websites and think "Wow!"?
What level do you aspire to achieve with your photography?

The idea for this thread is to list some photographers that have inspired you, with a link to their website if possible.

I'll start by saying that I'm in awe of the way that these two photographers portray nudes and lingerie in such a stylish and artistic way. If I could shoot anything like this I would be very, very happy. :D

My main focus over recent years has been equine photography, apart from photographing our horses Mary and I regularly follow the North East Cheshire Drag Hunt throughout the hunting season which lasts from September to April. Just to allay anyone's fears the NECDH does not hunt live quarry, rather the hounds follow a man made scent. The hunt features my images on its website:

As you can imagine this type of field ( literally ) photography poses many challenges ranging from extremes of weather, poor light, barbed wire fences and the possibility of losing contact with the field. It does however provide an extremely satisfying way to mix photography with my love of horses and field sports.

Getting back to the main question, the photographer whose work I most admire is Sarah Farnsworth, in my humble opinion she is probably the best hunting photographer around at the moment.

Check out her work at:
http://sarahfarnsworth.zenfolio.com/

For the record, whilst I admire her work I do not particularly warm to lady herself. She regularly makes disparaging remarks about us amateur toggers who she refers to as week end warriors. Se thinks that we should all take up other hobbies and leave everything to the professionals. What she fails to realise is that us amateurs cover the ordinary local hunts while she and her professional colleagues restrict their activities to the premiere league hunts where all the money is.

Anyway, as it has never been a pre requisite that you have to like someone to admire their work, I always look forward to seeing Sarah's posts of FB.

John

PS if anyone fancies a day out in the countryside, photgraphing the hunt, drop me a line and we'll sort something out for the coming season.

To be honest there are so many....but Ansel Adams is a perennial favourite. Plus many of the classic photographers such as Julia Margaret Cameron. She is technically poor, but manages to capture a real feeling of the people she photographed. Content over technical quality.

The working photographer who was an early influence was Kevin MacDonnell. He was a regular contributor to "Photography" magazine for many years. He was down to earth and had a great sense of humour. He talked good sense.
Best regards

Browsing the shelves at Waterstones on Deansgate and the Arndale the other day, two books [which I will add to the thread on this in time] on iconic images and the photographers, have been added to my photographic library.

This got me thinking, whose work will we look back on in 25 or 50 years time and consider iconic - are there any new masters of photography or will it be those who we admire and who inspire us now by their timeless photographs, another 25 or 50 years further on in history?

It's an interesting question.
'Rising Stars' that spring to mind include:

Joey L - http://www.joeyl.com/
Lara Jade - http://www.larajade.co.uk/

And more established names such as:

Rankin - http://rankin.co.uk/
Nick Knight - http://nickknight.com/main.html
