Michael Schmidt has been announced as winner of the fifth Prix Pictet photography prize.

Mr Schmidt was chosen for his monumental work Lebensmittel (food stuff) made between 2006 and 2010. The prize, with a value of 100,000 Swiss Francs (USD$112,500, GBP£66,800 ), is sponsored by Swiss wealth and asset managers, the Pictet Group.

Speaking on behalf of the Jury, Sir David King, Chair of the Judges, said, ‘we agreed to award the Prix Pictet to Michael Schmidt whose Lebensmittel is an epic and hugely topical investigation into the ways in which we feed ourselves.’

Only that there can be a huge difference in perception between university course work, commercial work, international salons, cameras club competitions, etc. It would be easy to feel confused about what is therefore good or bad, but in the end it's art and there are many different ways to look at art.

We seem the same disparity with the portrait competitions as well, where often winners are perceived by many as snapshots.
