Compact cameras are not the easiest to use for wildlife, but here's one with the Pentax Q-S1 and 15-45mm zoom that I was quite pleased with.

Any thoughts?

Purists would point out that you cut his tail off. I don't think it matters too much.

Good colours, lovely detail, nice and sharp.

The background is a touch distracting, but a minor point.

Good comments from Paul. I saw the pic of the full bird on ephotozine (trust its the same one!) and much prefer this one.

It is the same bird Janice, and I prefer this one too.

The other photo was needed because that shows the egg the bird is guarding. I don't think it's as good as an image, but as Natural History it's more appropriate.

I think you've done everything right here John, great subject, well exposed and you've caught it at it's best side-one pose.

The fact you've used a compact is the only thing that let's it down slightly - needs better background separation that only a telephoto can achieve. Still like the image overall though.
