Thank you to Mel for choosing my entry as the previous winner, a fete I have only managed once before.

I would like, for this competition, to give you the chance of a photo that is worth upwards of a million pounds. There was a news story about a photo of a potato that was sold for that figure.

I'm looking for a single vegetable portrait. No multiple items. Entries may be enhanced or manipulated but, only the vegetable please.

As I recall, closing entry is a fortnight, so midnight, Tuesday 22nd March.

I thought long and hard about this one and eventually settled on this baked potato, the overall look inspired by the potato-like structure of Deimos, the smaller of the two Martian moons. Shot using a backing board as the background, natural light with baffles and the Pentax MX-1 compact. On a tripod of course.

John Riley - Deimos

John, I'm assuming this was baked the previous evening. It's all in the preparation. I like the textures and the details in the eyes you can see. the lighting is good, up to the right, meaning there is a falloff bottom left.

Janice Freeman - Know Your Onions!!

I like the colours on this, deep brown and gold, you've really brought the texture out on the skin, and all the better for the tear that goes right across it. The lighting looks straight on at it, so the falloff is around all edges, but I like the contrast.

Mel Barnes - Convenient carrot .....

I like the thought that's gone into this, and the lighting as well. I can see the pieces to the left getting darker. I'm glad you didn't use any more light sources to try and get that back in. There's detail in the skin and the inside segments. First thing I did is count the number of slices, and there's thirteen, so that's my OCD all over the place.

Gwen Barnes - A Hearty Meal

Gwen, exactly the kind of entry I was expecting. I thought there would be a few odd shaped items here, but a pleasant heart is lovely. It has I can see some texture, along with the mud and the different colours of the skin.

Alan Kemp - Spring Onions

Alan, you did break the rule of no multiple items, but I will forgive you. I like that the onions are slightly scraggly, you haven't dressed them up according to EU laws, and putting them on the book helps fill the frames as well. This is a good first competition entry.

Gordon Armstrong - Mr Potatohead

Gordon, correct, not exactly what I had in mind with enhancements, but you need to enjoy photography. I like the way you've got his eyes looking out of the shot, good portrait technique there. It did make me laugh, so thank you for that.

A good competition subject Phil and much enjoyed - just adds that element of fun to all the technical stuff! I loved all the entries and well done alan for joining in, hope to see more from you. Well done Mr Barnes - again. Bring on your challenge young man!!!!

Thanks Phil for your judging - there were some good entries here - shame I couldn't sell mine for millions though - in spite of it being a 13-Carrot shot!

Now to set a new subject - and I've got just the thing in mind.....
