Competition #269 - Vintage Vehicles

Post by John »

This time the subject is Vintage Vehicles. We see these all the time, perhaps parked up on the street or a car park, perhaps in a museum, perhaps at some steam event locally. Perhaps our own car is vinatge, or is that just old.....but Vintage really means, for this competition anyway, old enough so it is a rarity to see it out on the roads. So an orginal Mini could be vintage. A Triumph Mayflower certainly would be. Or an old tractor or steam vehicle.

Deadline is Midnight on Sunday 15th May.

This gives time to visit two suitable events - the 1940s weekend at Yorkshire Air Museum and the Steam event at Astley Green Colliery. Just in case someone doesn't have anything suitable yet.

Lots of entries please!
Best regards

John

I'm not normally interested in old cars. However, we were having lunch in a Dordogne restaurant 2 weeks ago, when the Bergerac Car Club filed into the car park. Couldn't resist a few photos. There were ancient Citröens, Renaults, even a Morgan, but this little Fiat caught the eye...and the sunlight.

A warm thank you to all who entered, it's always great to see members joining in. Let's have a look at each image first and then get to the winning three.

Mel has found a very attractive steam engine, and also managed to shoot it in action. The colours are great, the sharpness is good throughout and we even know where it was shot. An image full of interest.

Sue R has gone for a "beauty shot" as well as finding a steam engine that has a quirky and interesting name. As with Mel's image, there is good colour and sharpness.

Drainbrain has his brain firmly in gear and the result is a great picture of a great car, grabbing the chance when it presented itself. The metallic finish is captured extremely well. It could be argued that the car is very tight in the frame and a whisker more space around it would improve the picture, but that just might not have been possible at the location.

Danny has defeated himself by trying to post a TIFF in the forum, and that doesn't work. It has to be a JPEG file. I did send a message via PM.

Graham takes good advantage of the light, but there is quite a bit of foreground train that is outside the available depth of field. A smaller aperture would be needed to bring that all into focus.

Gordon has found a mysterious corridor of vintage buses, and the play of light is really attractive. It's all about light and texture and it works.

Daz offers a great car, really attractive and interesting. Again, a bit more depth of field is needed to bring all the vehicle into the area of sharp focus. If this was hand held, then a tripod is the best answer, even though of course we all hate carrying tripods.

Anne has been on the canals, and it looks like the industrial area just beyond the Anderton Boat Lift. The action in the water adds interest. There's good exposure and sharpness and could only really be improved by better weather and therefore better lighting.

The final result then is:

WINNER and First Place: Mel
RUNNER UP and Second Place: Sue R
Third Place: Drainbrain

So it's over to Mel to find a tantalising and challenging subject for the next competition, number 270.
Best regards

Thanks, John. And thanks to all those who made some super entries on this topic.

I've not got my thinking cap on to choose a new topic!
