Hi Everybody, after last nights discussion, I have been reading through the terms and conditions of Photobucket, and it was like wading through a barrel of tar, with blue bloomers on, ( A favourite saying of an old friend of mine.)

This appears to be exactly what John Lyons was saying last night.

The terms are NOT easy to find, and even harder ( or impossible in my case )to understand, so the link is below, if anyone else want to waste a few hours wading thro’ them.

Has anyone got any other ideas, or know of any other hosting sites, that enables you to hot link to our forum without relinquishing your rights to your own work. It doesn’t appear from the above that putting a watermark on is any protection , as anyone is allowed to “delete from or add to” the content., and cloning out any content of an image is relatively easy to do, in a lot of cases, and perfectly legal with any image swiped from Photobucket, according to the above.

I only use Photobucket for posting to the forum, there are only about 6 images on there, and none of them of any importance, so as soon as I find another way of posting, I will be kicking the bucket into touch on principal.

Take your point Peter, and thanks for investigating. I wonder what the terms and conditions are for other hosting sites though? It may be that self hosting is the way to go.

My only consolation is that there's not much people can do with an 800 pixel wide image, but then again if it's mine I want to keep control of it.

There's a few of us who have our own websites as you know, I actually use different hosts for mine, but one of them is with Virtual names http://www.virtualnames.co.uk/lowcosthosting.php3, there are loads of different hosts out there. Anyway as an example there's 150Mb of space for £40+vat/yr and then a domain name would be needed, roughly £10/for 2 yrs.

So, only a suggestion, but the club could purchase a domain and host, then allocate a page to each member. Members could then use a firefox plug-in to upload photos to their page, or if there is a possible security problem with ftp user-names and passwords, then maybe members could email a photo to a committee member for them to upload it, thus restricting ftp to certain named users. Just a thought really, wont really stop images being copied, but we wont be giving our copyright away.

How much space is there on the adaps.org site, I notice the photos in the photo gallery there url to the site itself. Most isp's provide free hosting, though there maybe hot-linking problems.

Like Peter I only use Photobucket for posting images to the forum,( although at present I can't get it to send images,) but as I only need a host to send probably 6 or so images a year there is no point in paying to do this.

I think they have to have a condition such as that in order to be allowed to display your copyrighted work to the world.

Hi Paul, yes I went through those first, they are either, Pay sites, no hot linking, or have the same conditions as Photobucket. I am gradually working my way thro’ this list.

Hi Everyone
You may find that your internet provider supplies you with free personal web space, they don't advertise this fact very well but if you look on their home page and i mean dig deep you will find it
For all those who use blueyonder/virgin like me you'll find it in Selfcare, once you log in for the first time it should guide you through the process of setting up your alias name for the site and there is even a site builder software you can use, I use secondary software but the sitebuilder is very good.
Anyone on other broadbands need to have a good look i'm sure bt has the free space available as does most providers.

This discussion got me thinking. I do have my own webspace and originally I was going to create a 'photogrpahy website' for myself. However I have never gotten round to it, plus it was so much simpler and easier to use existing sites like Photobucket/flickr etc. So no more. Today I am starting to build myself a site and am also going to try hosting my own pictures for linking to forums.

So having said that, Here is my first attempt at placing one of my images on my server space and linking to it from the forum. Hopefully below will be an image of a cherry tomato in lemonade.

I host all my own images on the same server as adapsuk, rikeyuk and johnriley1uk. It works very well and I have total control over the images and storage! Nice photo btw!

OMG this all sounds so very complicated. I'm also with Virgin Media (Blueyonder) so followed Lee's advice and link to the Self Care page at Virgin. I got as far as registering myself then hit a brick wall, I hadn't got a clue where to start setting up a web page - if that's what I need to do. Does anyone have an idiots guide and I mean "IDIOT" in capital letters for us thickies who can just about manage to upload to photo bucket never mind setting up web space/pages or whatever it is we are supposed to do.....!!!!! I don't want to get left behind or be vulnerable to using photobucket now that I know the problems it can create.

Virgin Media Webspace portal. This should tell you everything you need to know.

If it helps, I for one will continue with Photobucket for the forseeable future.

We have now activated the Upload Attachment facility on the forum, so for those who wish to you can now directly upload your images.

Please see the details in the Images section. It's important that the file sizes should be kept down, to something similar to ePHOTOzine levels would be ideal, so a maximum of 800 pixels and aiming at a file size 0f 200-300K, as near to 200K as possible.

There is a bit of leeway on file sizes because some images will need more to retain the detail and some will be happy with a lot less.
