Gwydir Castle

Over the old bridge at Llanrwst you will find Gwydir Castle. Here we stayed for B&B in the King's Room and slept in a huge four poster bed that some king slept in in the 1500s. The sheets had been changed. The bath was as big as a medium sized lifeboat. The taps were those huge Victorian things that you see in stately homes. Quite brilliant.

Now I can't quite remember the story in detail, but in the 1930's (I think) Howard Hughes (or Getty) had all the oak (?) panelling shipped out of the hall of Gwydir Castle and sent to the states where it was to be re-used in a private mansion. However, it never was, and some time later Gwydir Castle got it back and I believe it is now fully restored.
I'm sure I got that from BBC's "Restoration" or some suchlike programme a few years ago.

The panelling was indeed oak and it was shipped to the USA and used in a film as a set. Can't remember which film.
When we stayed the new owners had just bought it back and had it reinstalled. Looked fantastic.
It was also pretty good having the run of the Castle all night, by candlelight!
