My First Ever Studio Shot - Please Vote

Post by PhilipHowe »

I've been going through some old photos and found this. It's the very first shot I took at C-Studios in Wigan on a shoot organised by Lee Bold, which a few of us attended on 8th September 2009. This was the first ever studio shot I had attended.

I didn't think I got any shots from the night, but came away thinking I'd learned a bit about lighting.

Obviously, I've just post processed it in Lightroom, just thought I'd share:

It is a decent shot and I do like it. The pose is unusual, but there's nothing wrong in that. Purists may comment on the subject being at the edge of the frame and looking out of the image, but it works.

I would like to see all the necklace though, and where there's a neckline it is useful to include it all and not cut it off.

Otherwise, you should be very pleased with this and I'm sure the model would be.
Best regards

I'm always doing that. In fact I'm currently in the middle of going through them again. I have several thousand images going back over the last 12/13 years and usually find one that I had previously disregarded, for example I've just reworked a studio portrait I took in 2007 and I really like it now.

I like the treatment you've given this shot, Philip. The detail and clarity on the jewellery and jumper is fantastic.

I understand the point about the necklace being chopped off but in this image it doesn't overly bother me. The pose and edge of frame composition is OK.

The thing that lets it down a touch for me is that her expression isn't too engaging. Just a minor point.

If it was one of mine I would take out the two lines on her neck and lighten up the nose shadow going across her left cheek and under her left eye a touch.

On the whole, nice job. 8)
