Forum Competition #108 Graffiti

Post by Janice Freeman »

I have just returned from a few days in Italy and Graffiti is in abundance! However, there was some real art on display. So what have we got in GB? I am sure that there will be plenty to choose from -unusual, colorful, artistic, witty, etc - no rudies! Have fun. Entries will end at midnight on 5th June.

Have fun

Janice :-d

Here is my graffiti, not much to be found locally these days (thought I was going to have to paint some of my own).

I know it is a strange subject – asking a photographer to portray the art work of someone else. However, they deserve to be recorded before they are over-painted, cleaned off or even knocked down! It is interesting to see that we do photograph graffiti, and even more interesting to see where we find it. Some lovely works of art here and all extremely well photographed. Now for the hard bit....

1 Graffitti Boat: Great image containing lots of colour and texture and judging from the windows, possibly a huge piece of work – but hard to tell.

2 Ross-on-Wye: A nice piece of work however, would have liked to have seen this from a different perspective – either a straight-on shot including more of the building or a more extreme angle. Well done for looking up – something that we don’t often do!

3 Bournemouth Promenade: I like this, lovely gentle colours, a really jolly art work and we can see it in a very appropriate place - along the promenade . A good subject for the position it is in!

4 Myra. Very colourful piece with good detail showing the lines of the brickwork. Not sure what it is meant to be – but I am no art critic!

5. I know exactly where this one is – and it does make me laugh! A cheeky monochrome in the depths of Manchester. Well photographed in the murky light!

6. Graffitti Greek Style: A well known character, and once again good to know where it is and see on what it has been painted.

7 The Black Duke: I love this image. It combines the graffiti with the location and we can see exactly what it is painted on. Not as colourful as the others, but a good subject with plenty of detail, a touch of mystery, atmosphere and interest in the whole image.

8 China Garden Restaurant This one has been done for a specific purpose and is a lovely colourful crafted work of art. Well photographed with lots of detail showing.

9. Never seen graffitti poetry before - and a well chosen piece! Must have a great deal of patience to do something like this! Well spotted. I really like the subject, however I find the image a little on the dark side - probably not surpising when we consider where these are found.

Many thanks to all those who sent in images and here are my choices  -

3rd Graffitti Boat - Gerry Gentry

2nd Bournemouth Promenade - Mike Aspinall

1st The Black Duke - Critical Mass.

Well done everyone and lokking forward to the next subject matter.

Janice.

Your not allowed on site and the Geisha isnt viewable from the public path ( it's at the rear to the left of the ship ) .....as an explorer we dont really pay attention to the no entry signs ;-] . The security on this boat have got a real bad rep due to their heavy handiness with " people like us" and they lived up to their rep when they caught up with us....to the point of insisting that my camera and gear as it was on their property now belonged to him. Safe to say he didnt get my gear and nor did i delete any of my shots.
