Forum Competition #111 - Over the roof tops

The theme this time is over the roof tops. For example views from any vantage point high enough to give a birds eye view of the villages, towns or our cities.

The Isle of Mull ferry arriving at Oban on Scotland's west coast.

In the background you can see the chimney of Oban Distillery and McCaig's Tower, the town's famous folly based on the Rome Collosseum.

As always, the hard part of setting a competition, the judging!

Janice - View from top of Harlech Castle.
This is a well spotted image and keeping detail in the opening of the rock framing the picture has helped in the composition. The only thing spoiling the image for me is the bottom section seems to be a little lighter than the rest of the picture, otherwise it is a pleasing image

Dennis - candid view of Big Ben.
I like the way this has been treated, bringing out detail on the stonework and roof tops and not spoiling an interesting sky, certainty an unusual view of such an iconic landmark.

Philiphowe – Sorrento
This does not work for me, the right hand side of the image is very soft and out of focus and there is a little too much water in the foreground, maybe a tighter crop would have improved the image.

John ¬- Lincoln Backs
You have mentioned the word wacky, and this certainly is a wacky view. I can only imagine you were trying to fit all the roof tops into the image and did not have a wide angle lens. Thinking outside the box, if this was included in a photo album and the roof tops positioned horizontally across the page it would look quite effective.

Eric - from the top of the Imperial War Museum tower, Salford Quays
You have managed to capture all the buildings in the frame and kept all the verticals up right. There is very little treatment to this image and it appears in focus throughout the picture. I little more of the reflection of the large tower and a little less sky would improve the composition.

Tracey – Prague
How high were you! The people look like ants running around the street. I like the way you have kept the vertical lines vertical and still maintained good focus throughout the image. The composition works well with the subject and the lighting is good.

Paul - The Isle of Mull ferry arriving at Oban on Scotland's west coast.
This is a very busy image but this adds to its appeal. The lighting is good and it is well composed. I imagine that you used a long focal length which has compressed the image, bringing the subjects together and this helps in the composition.

Collier15 - wigan parish church
Getting high enough to get a bird’s eye view of a city is not always easy. The view point for this image is just about there, although I think there is a little too much sky; maybe a letter box format would have improved this picture.

Critical Mass - The Arc De Manchestaaaaaa
This is a good image, I like the way it appears to have been taken with a fisheye lens. There is plenty of colour in the building and you have kept all the buildings upright, I know it must have been a long exposure and you did well to keep things in focus.

John Harwood - The Roof Tops of Elx.
There is a lot going on in this image and had it not been for the dome in the centre of the picture there would be no point of interest to rest your eyes on. I am not sure if the colour version would have improved the image or not. You have kept all the lines vertical as they should be, there are no leaning buildings.

Now the hard part…

1st place, Eric with Salford Quays
2nd place, Dennis and Big Ben
3rd, Critical Mass and Arc de Manchestaaaaa

Congratulations Eric an excellent image. There were some really good images in this comp and it obviously caught peoples interest.

I re-visited my original image with regard to your comment on the lightness at the bottom and it would appear that this has been a fault on the upload as the original image keeps the correct tones and exposure. When you look at the comp image, you can see a distinct line going across the bottom, not complaining, and well spotted Barry. It shows attention to detail - something I must pay more attention to!!!

Well Judged with some good comment. As always, look forward to the next subject.
