Tattoos...?

Post by Paul Jones »

I was just reading a discussion on another forum about tattoos, so thought I'd post a pic.

Tattoos..... Do you like them, or loathe them?

Have you photographed anyone with tattoos? Why not add your photo to this thread.

It's actually quite unusual now to find a model who doesn't have one.

Here's Megan. I was trying some different processing on this. Feel free to comment...

I must say that I don't really like tattoos - male or female but especially on females. It is a personal choice - a bit like dress style or wearing make-up etc etc.. However, having a tattoo is a huge decision - as once done, it can never be removed. Why would a good looking male or female think that it enhances their beauty or the butch and tough think it makes them look hard? (That was the main reason that both male and female inmates gave - when I spoke with them about it - for having them done). Many have them done for other reasons, ritual, religion, to cover scars, selling their body for advertising space. At one time, evidence of a tattoo was a sign that you belonged to the wrong crowd! At the same time, they fascinate me and the skill and artwork are often amazing. Why not choose something less permanent like body painting which can be removed and changed when one is fed-up with it. They also extend back 1000's of years as discovery of some mummified bodies has shown. Do I know what I am talking about - Hm! Like them - not really. Photograph them - yes I would!

I don't like them at all. People seem to have them done so they can look different, now you are different if you don't have one. Men can get away with it more than women for the reasons Janice gave, in that it makes them look harder, I can't understand why a woman would want to look hard. The one on Cheryl Cole's back is hideous, what was she thinking?

Having said that, from a photography point of view, they can make an interesting image.

They do nothing for me and I prefer without.
I must get at least one email a week stating I should photograph model X, who has a new tattoo that would good in my portfolio and she charges £nnnn.
I do have photos with tattoos, because they have them, not because I seek them.

Here's a photo of some ladies with just a small tattoo, which I don't think is too bad. ;-]

Hahaha - I remember Fantasy Island, used to be one of my favourite programmes along with The Love Boat - have I just lost some street cred for admitting to that

Oh dear, Tracey's street cred up in smoke!

Back to the subject, I don't know why a pretty girl would want to disfigure herself with tattoos. Some of them are very much OTT and when she gets older and the skin gets a bit more saggy...whatever will they look like then? Fashions will change as well and changing a tattoo is a painful business.

However, in terms of photography I'm in am "as it is" mood at the moment, so nose studs (ugh), tattoos, bones through the cheeks.....they all get left in.
Best regards

Hi Paul

I'm sticking my neck out here, and apologise to any club members with tattoos. As I see it, the problem with tattoos is that they are permanent, and if you change your mind later (as with putting names of lovers on arms...) you are well and truly stuffed (unless you are lucky enough to get a lover with the same name...). Also I'm led to believe that laser treatment to remove them is expensive, very painful, doesn't completely remove the tattoo, and often results in larger tattoos being commissioned to cover up the unwanted tattoo. However, all this doesn't matter if you have a tattoo that's in a place that isn't usually on display...

Cheers

Mel

I don't have any tattoos, or particularly like them but tattoo or not we are all likely to look less attractive when the skin starts to sag!

I think tattoo's are great, on a woman though I personally don't like them on the chest (other attractive things there to look at  ) my problem is facial piercings, ust think it ruins a pretty face.

each to their own though, it is a personal choice.

Ok, so, I had a shoot on Sunday with a tattooed, pierced model with coloured hair.
I've changed my mind, I'm now looking for models with tattoos and piercings.

This link will disappear, as these are only rough edits but:

I can see why, Philip. She has a pretty face.

The face is actually the main factor for me in deciding whether to photograph someone, or not. I'm actually not that bothered if they have tattoos or not. If they have an expressive face that I feel I can get something from then I will usually work with them.

The classic example would be our good friend Melissa B, whose body is fairly well adorned with tattoos, but she has a beautiful face and personality and knows how to work the camera.
