Further to my studio work, I also have a nice little sideline in gig photography. I now have my own site where I photograph and review live acts at http://MancunianWays.com.
Low Light at gigs is very challenging, you can't use flash and you only have three songs to get all your shots in. I took a shot last weekend on my 50mm at f1.4, ISO6400 (maximum) and 1/30th sec. Here are a few recent shots:
Polica - Manchester Ritz - This is the darkest light I have ever taken a photo in.
The Struts - Sound Control - dingy lighting, got to get in there quick. These guys are going to be big.
Black Sonic Revolver - Night and Day Cafe - This guy fixes commercial aeroplanes all day, then plays guitar at night
The High Nines - Night and Day Cafe - probably my favourite band to watch and they are unsigned, I also did their last batch of promo pics which they use now. Does anyone have an opinion on the last two shots? Usually the lights are blue or red, both bad for photography, however, black and white loves it as the contrast is more suited.
Peter Hook - One of the perks is that you get to stand only a few metres from someone who you have spent most of your life listening to. This is Peter Hook from Joy Division/New Order/Revenge/Monaco/MrsMerton's backing band/Peter Hook and the Light.

A cracking set of images there Phil. You've done extremely well to get these so sharp in such dark conditions.

Top stuff Phil. Not an easy skill at all to perfect. As I for one know only too well.... It should be camera law that anyone who owns a DSLR, should do a night of low light photography. Ps Kevin from BSR is my favourite image.

Hi Philip
You know I've already commented on your new venture. I think you have a brilliant domain, an excellent idea, and the opportunity to turn this into something great.

Thanks Paul, and Tracey, that's very kind.
My favourites are the two of Peter Hook, as I love the rim lighting.
Stu, see you at the next one!
