Perch Rock Lighthouse

Post by Paul Jones »

Darren and I had a ride to New Brighton for some outdoor portraits and coastal shots.

The weather wasn't great, but here's one I liked.
Please feel free to comment.
And post your own photos of lighthouses.

Hi Paul, great shot with interesting subject and foreground. Personally I would lower the exposure slightly. Also I can't make out if the horizon isn't quite level, thus making the lighthouse appear to lean, or if the lighthouse is actually leaning?

Thanks for commenting Mel :D

It's not great, but it was the best shot of the day, given the weather. I'm pretty sure the horizon is straight. I just scrolled the page up to where the horizon line on the photo is hitting the edge of my browser menu bar and it looks straight to my eyes. :D

I quite like the muted colours refreshingly different.

A very nice image Paul. I like the foreground interest with the green algae on the rocks adding that touch of colour, not garish, nicely toned. Like Mel, I would also lower the exposure very slightly, but I think that is something that is down to personal taste. The lighthouse stands out nicely from the blue sky which has just a nice amount of detail. Nice composition with the subject sitting slightly left of centre. I like it.

Thank-you Janice, much appreciated.

Is the image looking too bright on yours and Mel's (and others) monitors?

Paul, the colours look good to me as does the horizon ...

Thanks Walter.

I'm reasonably happy with the photograph. It's not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a fair record of my visit and I do have a strong penchant for lighthouses.

I think you might be right about my monitor Paul. I've noted that my prints come out darker than projected on the monitor. Walter's comment tends to support it. I'll try to sort it out.

Hi Mel

As a test you could run the Windows Display Calibration - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/wind ... ur-display

Or buy a dedicated monitor calibration device, eg:

Spyder 4 Pro - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006TF37H8/?tag=paujon-21
Spyder 4 Express - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006TF3746/?tag=paujon-21
X-Rite i1 Display Pro - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0055MBQOW/?tag=paujon-21
X-Rite ColorMunki - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0055MBQOM/?tag=paujon-21

Thanks Paul, I'll try the Windows calibration before investing in kit.

Hi Mel

See my post in the General Discussion Forum - Monitor Calibration - Are your prints dark?
