Thursday 10th July 2014 - Folios

Post by John »

We used to run Folios on a regular basis, but this largely stopped when we stopped taking the print folios and it all went to CD. However, the standard of these has risen considerably and we also get some ADAPS images as well from time to time, which is always interesting.

A Folio is simply a collection of images, now projected, that is the best/most interesting of the pictures submitted to L&CPU competitions. It is also a collection not originating from the L&CPU, for example folios from the RPS and other organisations.

For this event, I'm going to look at what we have and select a couple of the best selections. If I can find images that are particularly relevant to our current interests, and wildlife and monochrome seem to be two of them, then I may well favour showing those.

There's a great benefit in seeing what other clubs do, it shows us where our photography lies in relation to the general standard. We'll make this lively, but not making fun of the pictures as was pointed out, and we can have a group discussion as a club, so feel free to say when you like or dislike an image and, of course, why.
Best regards

Thanks for a very enjoyable night last night John. Don't know what you think, but I think that ADAPS members have produced as good as if not better photos than some of those shown last night.

Yes, although there were some exceptional shots, the majority were no better and in many cases not as good as the ones we see at ADAPS. Members of ADAPS produce just as exceptional shots, but it's good to see that and be able to know how our standards compare.
Best regards

Hopefully, seeing the standard out there and knowing that our members can produce just as good, should encourage more members to enter the L&CPU competitions, they are free and it's nice to see the photos getting the recognition they deserve.

After last night's photos I might be tempted next year - but I feel it's a wee bit presumptuous as a beginner to put my work forward against seasoned and recognised photographers.

I think it's that attitude that tends to hold many ADAPS members back.

Sorry Mel - I don't agree with this statement at all, if you think your work is good enough, then get it entered.

Its for competitions like this that we tried to organise the critique nights to help people take their work to the next level, not just for salons but for regional and national competitions like this, unfortunately they never really took off as we had hoped, maybe we need to re-think them if it would help people build their confidence and see that their images are just as good as we saw last night.

Thanks Tracey; I wasn't able to attend the critique nights, but if they surface again I would gladly attend, and will have a go at submitting my photos on the next relevant competitions.
