Nikon D5300 is dead after 10 months

Hello all,
my camera has the 'dead battery syndrome: a black battery icon, shows up in the viewfinder. If I can get into the menu, the battery shows charged. When I can manage to try and auto-focus, the lens just moves in and out but it doesn't focus. I have done a camera re-set but it hasn't cured the fault. The battery and lens contacts are OK. I've used another lens and battery, too but no joy. Anyone any clues on this big problem?

It's under a year old, I'd suggest taking it back where you purchased it and claiming it under warranty. Do it now before it's too late.

That is what I'm doing. I was wondering a the problem was; a friend of mine said it could be corrupted software.

The tail-end of the story: I sent the camera back to Value Basket and after 9 week, I got it back. I tried my new battery and it didn't work. I contacted Value Basket and the reply was that: it had been tested and that it was my battery, which wasn't a Niton one. I contacted Niton who said my battery was an acceptable one. Off I went to Mathers, who tried 4 batteries, non worked. I tried to find my Nikon warranty, so I could send it to Nikon. Hmm, could I? So I remembered how the fault started: Lens wouldn't focus, then the menu wouldn't show, all ending up with just a dead battery icon. Now this smacked me in the head as a loose cable. Screw driver at the ready but no manual: took out many screws out as I could find and tried to take the back off. No way but I could see some cables, so I touched them. Bloody hell, the menu came on! No focus as yet as I've not found the other screws to take the back off, completely. It seems to be the same body as the d5100 and I've got the strip-down website for it. Lesson:Value Basket = %+=@!

i'd still send it back to them again, sale of goods act etc etc......
