Competition #17 Shadows and/or Textures

Post by Tom Gerrard »

Hi there,

My selected subject for Competition #17 is Shadows and/or Textures.

It’s a favourite subject of mine and encourages one to be out and about when the sun is low. Artificial light can also be used extremely effectively.
Hope this whets your appetite and encourages you to enter.

Closing date is midnight on Friday 4 July 2008.

Regards, Tom.

Hi Dick

It's only supposed to be one entry per person, so if you could choose which one you want to go forwards with that would be much appreciated!

As a rule, once posted, entries should be left unchanged, otherwise entries could be constantly updated in respsonse to what others have posted and that wouldn't really be in the spirit of things.

Thanks! :)
Best regards

I doubt if i was the only person to photograph this during yesterdays club trip.
No doubt daunting at one time but It could probably do with a bit of draught proofing now. :D

Many thanks to everyone who entered. I was surprised at the diversity of the subjects you chose and enjoyed looking at your entries, choosing a winner was extremely difficult.

Dick. A good landscape shot, but I’m not sure where the shadows/textures are. Perhaps it’s my monitor, but I feel if you had cranked up the contrast a bit, it might have been better…..?

Len. A great shot taken in Yosemite N. P. showing lots of shadows and emphasising the texture of the rocks, especially on the right hand side.

Myra. Another good subject, but I feel the lighting is a little to flat. Nevertheless a great pattern picture.

John. In my opinion this is great piece of photography. If you look at the histogram of the image, it happens all on the right hand side, but it still retains all the details in the shadows.

Steve. Another image that leaped out at me. Again the exposure is spot on. I find myself repeatedly looking around the image and seeing something new each time. A great shot.

Tracey. I really don’t know what’s going on here. This poor tree certainly got his or her knickers in a twist early in life. Well seen and taken.

Des. Another example of Des’s ability to see a picture in something most people would walk past. Make of it what you will, but I find myself looking at it over and over again and seeing something different each time. Well seen and executed.

Keith. Another well seen and taken shot. The weather worn wood and iron make an excellent subject.

Ian. A fabulous shot. The lighter skin tones are superb but I feel the shadows are blocked out, which lets it down a little. Still a good shot.

Bazzasmeg. A very pleasant rural landscape, but I do think the dark tree on left side dominates the image.

So 3rd place goes to Ian Austin
2nd to Steve Unsworth
1st to John Riley

Who I am sure will choose the subject for the next competition shortly.

Thanks once again,
Regards, Tom.
