Photoshop cs2 raws

Post by Lee Bold »

I have just upgraded to a canon 40D which uses CR2 Raw files but i can't open them in photoshop CS2 it keeps
telling me incompatable file. I have updated photoshop to the new camera profiles and still no luck.
I have tried a trial version of CS3 and that works OK, can anyone help please.

If you need to go for another RAW converter, then Silkypix is very highly regarded.
Best regards

Lee,

One of the joys of Adobe, though it could update its raw converter to read .cr2 raw files from the 40D it wont because it wants you to upgrade to CS3. The same applies to my 450D and no doubt also for the new 1000D.

Now the best method is to use Canon's own software, Digital Photo Professional that comes with your 40D and is updated fairly regularly, as in every few months. Its better at reading Canon raw files than Adobe or any of the other software converters, because its made by Canon and they are the only ones that know their own cameras, lenses and raw files inside out. It is quite a sophisticated program now, with certain usm lenses it know all the details of that lens. Thus with say the 17-85 which is renowned for barrel distortion at 17mm the software can correct the distortion with one click of your computer mouse.

Once you've worked on the file in DPP you can then transfer it into photoshop ( its on the 'Tools' menu) it will open your version of photoshop for you converting it into a tif file.

If there is time tomorrow night after my talk I'll show you.

Thanks Guys, i have been playing with the canon software and still getting to grips with it.
But it can be a pain having to run one program and then another when you have a few files to deal with.
Damn that adobe, its all about money these days.
Thanks Lee

Adobe have a free RAW converter utility for download on their site which supports 40D files. Just batch convert to Adobe RAW .dng files which you can open in CS2.

The DNG trick works very well. I've used it for a while because the cataloging program I use - iView Media Pro (or Expression Media now it's been bought by Microsoft) - doesn't support the raw files from my camera. So I have the bizarre situation of converting DNG files to DNG files so that they can then be imported into iView. Given Microsoft's upgrade prices for Expression Media - £100 for little more than a bug fix - I'll probably be moving to Lightroom to when v2 of that is released.

With the 40D you'll end up with DNG files from the CR2 files you're starting with. CS2 will be able to read those as mentioned above.

In the convertor try selecting the 'lossless compression option. This will possibly give you smaller files without any data loss.

I looked at a number of RAW converters when I got my 40D.
Canon's DPP is not bad but a little "clunky" and I could not get the colours the way I like them.
I own a copy of Capture one but the version 4 happily creates a chach file in each folder you open of 1.5 meg per picture. And it does not clean up after itself so you have to go in and delete them manually. Absolute madness.
I run Bibble Pro which has a much better work flow once you get to grips with how it operates. There is a plug-in which works within Photoshop.
You can down load a 30 day trial verions from bibblelabs.com.
Silky pics did a very nice job on the conversions but the interface has been designed by a drunken japanees on speed.  It left me with a screamin headach.

If you want to stay within photoshop I suggest you give the Bibble plug-in a go
