Forum Competition #177 - Churches and Cathedrals

Post by Paul Jones »

I'm sure we've all taken a photo of a church or cathedral at some point when we're out and about.

I want you to wow me with your best shot - exterior, interior, close-up detail, stained glass window, whatever you like...

Closing date is midnight on Sunday 6th November.
Paul

Thank you to everyone for a varied collection of images.

Alasdair
This has all the hallmarks of a classic Alasdair Field image, down to the almost de rigueur camera tilt.
The building is pleasantly lit and exposed, however I feel you've taken the shot a touch too late, rendering the sky totally black and featureless, as well as the foreground interest. Night shots are best taken in the few minutes before the sky goes totally black.

Graham Otty
Beautifully sharp, and an interesting composition. The flowers add interest. Maybe you could have taken a few steps back so that we're not looking upward to the figures? An interesting image though. Very striking.

John
Gorgeous detail, and colours. Maybe it would have been nice to have got more of the lectern in. Not much wrong with this though.

Tracey
I've taken a few images like this, so can appreciate that the exposure has been handled really well. There's detail in the window, the candles and the background. Very nicely done.

TerryA
This has possibilities. The building looks interesting. But, like Alasdair's image, the sky is totally black, so dominates the whole image. I think you needed to take it just as the night was beginning to draw in and there was some light left in the sky.
On a composition point, there's slightly more trees than church, but perhaps that couldn't be avoided.

Janice
Lovely image. Bags of detail. I'm wondering if it would benefit from a touch more colour saturation and increased contrast? Just to give it a bit more 'punch'. Maybe... maybe not. A very nice image nonetheless. Well taken.

Alan Kemp
Something different. Nicely seen and lovely golden light on the cross. Is there a small blob on the image in the upper quadrant of the cross at the 11 o'clock position?

Phil Jones
Nicely composed. The gravestones and bushes form a natural lead-in down towards the church. It really needed a blue sky though. The washed out white sky spoils it a bit.

Mike Aspinall
Here's a night shot with some light / detail in the sky. More interesting than a totally black sky. Good composition, with the church quite majestic as the centrepiece. Nicely done.

JohnJM
Unusual. The triangle shapes form an interesting composition. But, ultimately, it doesn't really engage me. Sorry.

Gordon
An interesting building, and you've got a good blue sky to show it off. Good colours throughout.
If I'm nitpicking I'd have probably preferred a landscape shot showing more of the building than the vertical shot presented.

I fully expected to choose a traditional church exterior as the winner, however the quality of the interiors has swayed my judging. So, here goes...

Joint 3rd place: Graham Otty / Janice Freeman
2nd place: John Riley
Winner: Tracey McGovern

Over to you for the next competition Tracey...

Thank you everyone.

Well done Tracey. Lovely image. I never get candlelight quite right! Some very good and helpful comments from Paul. Roll on next subject.
