Night photography

Hi All,
I'm wanting to take a night shot that includes some street lights. What would be the best settings for this? (Simple terms, please )

There are lots of different effects depending on exposure. There's also the question of whether or not you are using a tripod. I think the best way firward for this is to talk you through it on Thursday.
