Places to shoot - Google Maps for ADAPS

Post by Andrew Shepherd »

I'm off to Cornwall in a couple of weeks (very close to Wadebridge), for a week-long break. Does anyone know any areas that are worth visiting with photography in mind - I'm thinking along the theme of coastal landscapes. Any suggestions appreciated – I’m sure I’ll get a few hours to escape!

Cheers

Andrew

I'm afraid not - I have never been to Cornwall. However, due to work, I can tell you where some lovely waste tips are.

Thanks Pammie.

I just wonder whether we should/could have a map with recommended places to photograph, that members could contribute to. In google maps we could have our own map and members could pin point specific locations, even attaching photographs. It could become quite a useful resource. (I know Ephotozine and others have this but it doesn't seem very well populated and at least our map would be focused more locally.)

Personally, if I have a few hours free at weekends and I want to grab a nice landscape (or whatever), I'm never sure which way to head but this would certainly help me!

If there is enough interest I'll convert mine into an ADAPS version and then we can all edit it. When I see photographs I like I've been adding them to the map, just in case, one day I'm in the area. (It's only a week old though and not very well populated.)

What do you think?

Regards

Andrew

Hi Paul

This is one I set up the other day and I plan to add to it: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie ... a39fb90e01

Hopefully you'll get the idea, as members could also be set-up to add to it, creating a good database of places where we think are worth a visit and we can add in pictures too.

A good one to look at is the rusty wrecks at Fleetwood - zoom in - in Satellite view.

This link gives you more info on personalised maps: http://maps.google.co.uk/help/maps/mymaps/create.html

Cheers

Keith - I spotted that one on Ephotozine and added it to the map, but I didn't realise it was you! It's a fantastic shot and the processing you've done on all your photos is amazing.

I like this idea a lot and think it is worth pursuing! I worked for an architect who one used a Google maps and Sketchup to create mini buildings in the right location for all their projects. Nice idea and gave people something 'concrete' to look at. This is a similar idea but allowing members to put their pin on the map! :]

If members want to contribute to the map, let me have your email address and I'll associate your email address with the map, which then allows you to collaborate (i.e. add to it). You will need to set-up a google account, with your email address, but that only takes a minute and the link is here: https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAcco ... vice=local

Other members can just view the map, using the link further up the thread.

Andrew

PS - Paul thanks for the write-up on Wadebridge

Hi Andrew, thank you for the comments and I am pleased that this shot made you want to go and see the place for yourself. Thats probably the highest compliment for a landscape photograph.
The map sounds a great idea and I am sure many of us will use it to plan outings, and I will probably add a few of the places i get to if I think anyone else would be interested.

The link for the map is here: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en& ... 1227731850

And if members want to add markers to the map, you need to "sign in" - I've set-up a dummy username/password for this - placestoshoot@googlemail.com and password: adaps2008

Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Cheers

Andrew

I like the idea very much and will try to think of some places to add. If there are a lot of entrees they may need grouping. Is that possible?

John/Paul/Mike

Can we make Andrew's last post a sticky so it does not drop off the bottom and can we make the link bring the map up in a new tab/window?
It would help if we did not have all the previous messages, just the last one.

For those who are interested this is a link to subscribe to the RSS feed

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en& ... put=georss

This will keep you up to date on any additions to the map :-d

PS Could not figure out how to drop a pin. Maybe it is morning stupidity but meh.

Mike

You are not alone. :-d :-d :-d Finally clicked edit on the second collaborator and got some tools at the top of the map.
Finally managed to put a blue place marker in but not sure if that is how it should be done. :??
Is the top collaborator sticky pins and the second one blue markers? :?: :?:
