Strange viewfinder.

I was out in Manchester on Saturday. (Did anyone else see the tipping world theatre. Superb, but thats another story.) When I came across this gentleman taking a pic or two. So I decided to take a pic of him, like you do. Later when I was looking at the image I noticed he had a viewfinder attached to the rear screen. I havn't seen one of these before, and was wondering if there would be a real advantage. Could be something I need as my eyesight is poor, now I approach my geriatric years,, (not sure of the camera brand, I think its a Nikon. If you need to know.) I would also like to get some feedback on the image itself, If I could be so bold..Thanks

It has just been suggested that its used for video recording.... Get a Flip. would be my answer...

I too would have taken a photo of this chap; just because he looks interesting and has his own unique style. I like the image too, a good angle and the background doesn't distract from the main subject.

What lens/focal length did you use here? Just wondering if you were bravely up close or not?

Regarding his camera equipment my first thought was that it was a loupe of some type. Here is a link to something similar.

Apart from shielding the screen from ambient light, the lens in this device will enable the photographer to focus that close on the screen. It seems like a great way to convert the camera screen into a viewfinder when using LiveView.

He was only about 5 yards away. We were both in the crowd. Trying to capture some dance troop. I obviously got bored...lol

Thats no nikon, not a Digital one anyway could be one of them there Canons , and that lens looks very old indeed
also with a pistol grip and shoulder support and the red bit on the strap-- I could be wrong.

Hi Stu

I think it's a Canon 7D, judging by the two rubber covers on this side of the camera. I'd say he was shooting video and has the hand grip and shoulder support to steady the image rather than using a tripod, also using the eye piece against the face will give additional support.

Yes your right. Someone else has already mentioned to me it was used more for video. I was just surprised at it. Wouldn't be out of place in a Bond movie. Never done any video with my camera. Have enough headaches with stills..

Just had a longer look, and zoomed in a bit. (well ok, a lot) The camera, quite rightly is a Canon of some discription. I can read EOS top right, As you look from the front. But the the lens is definately a Nilon. Stamped Nikkor forty something to 88mm. That's why I wrongly assumed it was a Nikon camera.. Think thats one point each...lol.

Plus he needs a bloody good haircut for MI5,,,
