Camera from NASA's moon missions sold at auction

A Hasselblad camera claimed to have been used by U.S. astronauts on the moon sold on at auction in Vienna for nearly $1 million, despite questions as to the veracity of its travels.

The WestLicht Photoraphic Auction in Austria reported the camera, a Hasselblad Electronic Data Camera, sold for €550,000 (€660,000 with the buyer’s premium which is about $909,150) and was won by Japanese businessman Terukazu Fujisawa.

The auction house claims the camera was used on the Apollo 15 mission and was one of at least four Hasselblads to have been brought back from the surface of the moon. Most equipment was left on the moon to provide more room for mineral samples from the surface.

That just goes to show you can not put a good camera down. My main camera is the Hasselblad 500cm which is the type that first went to the moon, actually it was the 500c but the only difference is that the 500cm has a user replaceable focusing screen. Nasa says if anyone wants the moon camera they can have it for free but buyer collects. Later space flights used the 500cm the SWC with a 38mm Biogon lens and the 500EL. I think my camera was made around 1970 and is still going strong and has no electronics and is fully mechanical. I bet one of todays digital camera will not last that long, and they say its progress.

Remember Betamax was a better quality than VHS just like film is better. I was called a dinosaur once but better a dinosaur than a digital sheep. LOL.
